Mayan Wedding Ceremony at the JW Marriot Cancun, Mexico – Nick and Sarah

Looking For A Truly Exceptional Wedding Ceremony

These days, the wedding by the beach is something that has become a bit of a cliche. Not that it doesn’t have its reasons for becoming so: the place where the ocean meets the land truly is one of the most beautiful and romantic places on earth, but if you’re looking for something that will add a unique flavor to your wedding, you might consider a Mayan wedding ceremony. Mayan wedding ceremonies are distinctive in many ways, and are a once in a lifetime experience.

A Mayan wedding ceremony performed in Cancun is performed by a genuine Mayan shaman and includes all kinds of symbolism. Intended to connect those involved to the cosmos and to invoke a special connection to the Mayan gods, the ceremony is performed with the implementation of a special alter used to represent the four cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west. These four points are represented by flowers and candles that lay upon the altar. During Mayan wedding ceremonies, there are traditional offerings to the gods”corn, beans, fruit, and things of that type that are laid on the altar. In the center of the altar, there is a single candle that represents the unity of the feminine”representing Mother Earth”and the masculine representing Cosmic Energy.

During the ceremony, the friends and family members  gather around the couple and offer gifts, food, and perform songs which are played on pre-Spanish instruments native to the region. This creates an extremely festive atmosphere that can greatly contribute to the enjoyment of the moment.

For Mayan wedding ceremonies, its suggested that the couple and the guests wear light, natural clothing and, if possible, that they forego shoes so they can soak in the energy of those present and of the ceremony itself. After the ceremony, there is a traditional meal of food and drink native to the region and, in many cases, is considered sacred by the Mayan people. While the ceremony itself is as authentic as possible, there are certain areas where you can have things catered a bit to your own tastes.

Your wedding day should be one memory that will last you for your entire life. While you can do many things to make it a unique and memorable night, Mayan wedding ceremonies offer an experience like no other. If you’re looking to truly have an event like no other, then a Mayan wedding ceremony will likely be right up your alley. Combining beautiful scenery, a cosmic connection, and a light hearted atmosphere, these ceremonies will definitely give you an experience you’ll remember fondly for years to come.
